Lake Park man dies of injuries

Spencer, IA – On December 11, the Iowa State Patrol was notified of a serious injury crash near the intersection of Highway 18 and 300th Ave in Clay County. Due to the nature of the crash, a technical crash investigator was requested.

Marlyn D. Vantol, age 59 of Lake Park was operating a 2010 International semi-tractor and trailer combination. Vantol was a pedestrian outside his vehicle which was parked on the eastbound shoulder of Highway 18 at the time of the crash. Jeffery R. Cadwell, age 33 of Ayrshire was operating a 2015 Ford F-250 pickup towing a tandem axle car trailer. Cadwell was eastbound on Highway 18 approaching the Vantol vehicle. The Cadwell vehicle crossed the fog line and struck both Vantol and his vehicle while it was parked on the shoulder.

Mr. Vantol sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to the Spencer Municipal Hospital. He was later air lifted to Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Mr. Cadwell was not injured. Both vehicles sustained minor damage.

Mr. Vantol passed away on December 20 at Avera-McKennan Hospital.

This crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol Technical Collision Unit, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, and the Office of Motor Vehicle Enforcement.

Dickens Fire/EMS and Spencer Hospital’s Emergency Services assisted at the scene.
