A funeral service for Sylvester “Bart” Bartolo, 88, of Swea City, will be held Friday, April 26, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the Swea City Methodist Church with Pastor Todd Hartsock officiating.  Military honors will be conducted following the service.   Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Thursday at Oakcrest Funeral Services of Algona, Iowa and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church in Swea City on Friday. 

Sylvester “Bart” Bartolo was born December 31, 1935, in Kennedale, TX, son of Marcial and Rose (Magana) Bartolo.  At the age of 2, his family moved from Texas to Ledyard, Iowa.  He graduated high school in 1955 from Grant Township High School, near Swea City.  He then proudly served his country in the United States Air Force being stationed at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina.

Bart was married to Nancy Pendergrass on September 26, 1961, in Goldsboro, NC.  They raised their three sons in Swea City where he farmed until 1981, and then worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation until his retirement in 2000. Bart was an avid fan of his three boys.  He never missed a game or activity that his sons were involved in and coached their Little League teams.  He took so much pride not only in his kids, but also his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He loved following their activities and talking with them. Bart was a proud fan of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. He also enjoyed golfing, antiquing, gardening, decorating his home for Christmas, and traveling with Nancy to North Carolina, Las Vegas, Hawaii, Utah, Idaho, Yellowstone, and many other parts of the United States.  He was active in his community servicing on the city council, the library board, the American Legion, and the United Methodist Church.

Sylvester “Bart” Bartolo died on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the Good Samaritan Society at the age of 88.  

Bart is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nancy Bartolo of Algona; his three sons, Scott (Marcia) Bartolo of Arnolds Park, Eric (Jere) Bartolo of Mason City, and Damon (LuAnn) Bartolo of Wilmington, NC; 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren,  Alicia (Adam) Reynolds and their children, Andryk, Kasen, and Bentley; Brandon Bartolo and his son Harrison; Kendra Bartolo; Zachary Bartolo; Rebecca Bartolo; Kelli (Michael) Mishoe and their children Parker, Phoebe, and Miles; Mary Vance (Jonathan) Calhoun and their children Anna Blake and Palmer; and Gracie Bartolo.  He is also survived by his siblings, Manny Bartolo of Coon Rapids, MN, Mary Ann Tokheim of Schaller, Molly (Don) Schubert of Raleigh, NC, Buck Bartolo of Swea City, Lupe (David) Kollasch of Swea City, Julie (Mike) Dean of Maple Grove, MN, and John (Sheila) Bartolo of Algona; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents Marcial and Rose (Magana) Bartolo; in-laws Jesse and Minnie (Coley) Pendergrass; a sister Rosalie (David) Spaulding; brother-in-laws David Spaulding, Phil Tokheim, Joe Pendergrass, J.T. Pendergrass, John Pendergrass, Bill Brame, John Drewer, Carl Stone; sister-in-laws Betty Tart, Mary Brame, Mona Bartolo; great-grandson Hudson Bartolo; and nephews  Tommy Brame and Eric Pendergrass; and niece Mary Bartolo.
