He received his education in Lakota Schools, graduating in 1955. Don served in the United States Army from 1955-1958 in Germany.
On October 25, 1959, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Schwartz in Ledyard. After their marriage, the couple farmed and Don sold Crow's Seed Corn for many years. Don and Evelyn sold furniture and operated Johnson's Country Classics for several years.

Don enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, was an avid sports fan, loving his St. Louis Cardinals/Minnesota Twins and Hawkeye’s. But his true passion was spending time with his family.
