Harold Gordon Swanson was born on October 7, 1925 near Mason City, Iowa, the son of Nels and Agnes Christine (Madsen) Swanson. He attended country schools in his early youth; he later attended and graduated from Swea City High School in 1943. After high school, he joined the Army Air Corp, upon completion of his time in the military he returned to the Swea City area and began farming and selling farm equipment with his brother Elvin. On March 5, 1961, he was united in marriage to Genese M. Thompson at Blakjer Lutheran Church in rural Fenton, Iowa. The couple made their home in the Armstrong/Swea City area. Harold passed away at his home on April 28, 2017 at the age of 91 years. At Harold’s request his body was donated to the University of Des Moines.
Harold was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Swea City. He was also a member of the Swea City American Legion where he helped with the military funeral honor guard. He was also a member of the National Rifle Association and the North Kossuth Gun Club. He enjoyed trapshooting, fishing, farming, and telling a good story. When traveling with Harold, there was always time to stop for coffee and donuts or pie at the truck stops.
Harold is survived by his wife Genese of Armstrong; his sons: Gary (Mary) Swanson of the Twin Cities, and Jon Swanson of Armstrong; his step-son Bill (Diane) Hampton of Armstrong, his two grandchildren: Anne (Shannon) Hamm and David (Kate) Hampton; his three great-grandchildren: Avery, Adlyn, and Iris Hamm; and his sister Donna Joanne Sanftner of Bloomington, MN.
Harold is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Elvin Swanson and his sister Meta Mae Heaton.
