Orlin was born May 19, 1936, in rural Armstrong to Edward and Marjorie (Johnson) Solberg. He was educated in the Cylinder school system, where he excelled as a musician and vocalist. Those talents led him to Morningside College in Sioux City, where he majored in music and toured with the college choirs and bands.
On Dec. 21, 1957, Orlin married Barbara (Wiseman) Solberg. Their married life was spent in Ringsted, where Orlin worked as an independent truck driver, operated a corn shelling business and worked as assistant manager for Stateline Cooperatives in Ringsted and Bancroft until his retirement. Orlin passed away on January 30, 2017 at Valley Vue Care Center in Armstrong at the age of 80.
Orlin served as president of the Armstrong-Ringsted Board of Education and enjoyed life as a hobby farmer, raising sheep in rural Ringsted. Nothing made Orlin happier than fishing, watching Cyclone sports, attending county fairs, listening to good music and laughing at the antics of his grandchildren. He didn’t know a stranger, and he taught his children to approach life the same way.
Orlin is survived by his brother, Roger (Pauline) of Armstrong; son David (Carol) Solberg of Armstrong; daughters Debra (Kerry) Gibson of Ames and Diane (Jake) Janowak of Minneapolis; grandchildren Kyle Solberg, Kate Gibson, Kelsey (Bob) Clark, Sam Gibson, Jack Janowak and Madelyn Janowak; uncle Rev. Gehard Vorland of
Stillwater, Minn., and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara; his parents; brother Gary Solberg, sister Sheryl Jacobsen, and his grandparents.
