Janis E. Campbell, 75 of Emmetsburg, Iowa passed away May 10, 2022.  A funeral service was held Tuesday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg.

Janis Ellamae (Rikansrud) Campbell was born September 27, 1946 in Canton, South Dakota to Clifford and Olive (Nelson) Rikansrud. Her parents chose her middle name from her paternal and maternal grandmother’s first names. Janis was baptized and confirmed at Canton Lutheran Church in Canton.

She graduated from Canton High School in 1964. Janis attended General Beadle State College in Madison, SD, graduating in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science major in Elementary Education and double minors in English/Speech and Music.

Janis met Brian Campbell while attending General Beadle. They were married on August 18, 1968 and welcomed their daughter, Kimberly, the next year. Janis taught school in Madison, SD and Tyndall, SD before moving to Emmetsburg, IA in 1970. She provided in-home daycare and she worked in the insurance field for 37 years. She was organist at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg for 50 years and at Trinity Episcopal Church in Emmetsburg.

Janis was a member of the country coffee club, Progress Club, Palo Alto County Republicans and director of Bethany’s Junior Choir. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg where she was very active in Women of the ELCA, Sarah Circle and Worship Board. She was also very active in the Western Iowa Synod Women’s Organization. She played piano and organ and gave lessons on both instruments. Brian and Janis were also blessed to be very active in their grandchildren’s, BriAna and Phoenix, lives, never missing an event.

Janis died on May 10, 2022. Grateful for having shared her life are: her daughter, Kim (fiancé Jim) of Ringsted, IA; her granddaughter, BriAna (Alec) of Lincoln, NE; her grandson, Phoenix of Spirit Lake, IA; brother, Kirk (Cheryl) of Canton, SD; sister-in-law, Barb of Canton, SD; brother-in-law, Craig (Connie) of Lead, SD; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Brian on July 21, 2020; parents, Clifford and Olive; brother, Gary; in-laws Donald and Estella and her grandparents.
