River Scare Sends Shock Through Community

What could have been a tragedy at the East Fork of the Des Moines River ended safely for three young girls, but not before sparking concern among neighbors. The call came into Emmet County Dispatch Wednesday at 3:29 p.m., when Charles Doucet Jr. reported that one girl’s boots were stuck in mud in chest-deep water. She was accompanied by two friends, who were unharmed. The Armstrong Fire Department responded, and the girl was freed in 40 minutes and evaluated by EMS personnel. The river south of town has long been a place for fishing and adventure for all ages, but this incident is a reminder that caution is essential near the water.
